Last night, I had my first visit to the Drift On Inn since I begin studying up on blackjack strategy. The circumstances were somewhat, um -- well, I guess you would say compulsive.
After hanging out with Michael A., watching the Sixers and Sonics stay alive in their respective playoff series and working, sort of, on our brilliant screenplay, I was driving home at around 11pm. Now, to go home from Michael's place, I jump on I5-South. But the on-ramp for I5-North appeared first, and I5-North is the quick route to the Drift On Inn (unlike the more atmospheric Aurora Ave, whose charms I mentioned in this previous post).
Oh, Echo and the Bunnymen just appeared on my computer, singing the fine, fine ditty Never Stop. How synergistic. More on them in a minute.
Anyway, so here it is, 11pm, and the next thing I know I'm zooming North on I5 to go gamble. I swear I had no intention of doing any such thing, but somehow my hands had turned the wheel and my foot had pressed down firmly on the accelerator and my mind had conveniently gone blank and when the blankness lifted I was halfway there.
Now, if there's one thing I know it's that heading to a casino at an hour approaching midnight on a work night smells like a sure way to lose a lot of money. But all those books had drummed into me the importance of money management so I was steadfast: I would risk $100 and not a goddamn $5 bet more! And if I lost it in ten minutes, so much the better, I'd be home before 12. And if I didn't, well, I would get the hell out of there by midnight, no ifs ands etc.
To cut this potentially long story short, I employed perfect basic strategy and left at midnight, $150 bucks richer.
Today I spent $30 of my winnings on half.com to buy the Echo and the Bunnymen CDs Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, and Ocean Rain. I love it when one obsession funds another.
