Minutes ago Melle Mel phoned from Indianapolis. She and Cricket just crossed the finish line -- they did it, 13+ miles, running all the way. Melle said her feet were blistered, her stomach hurt, she's tired as hell. But she sounded elated Way to go baby, I knew you could do it!

I just got to work, having played hooky this morning to help Melle get ready and drive her to the airport. You'll remember she's off to Indiana today to run a half-marathon on Saturday - 13 miles of gruelling fun. Because of the time difference, it'll be around 6am here when she starts. I'll be urging her on in my sleep, drooling "Go baby" into the pillow between snores. Seriously, I'm massively impressed by her dedication to this feat and quite bummed that I won't be there to watch her cross the finish line. Next time...

Breaking news from IMDB!

Pearl Jam's Environmentally Friendly Tour

Grunge hitmakers Pearl Jam are so concerned about saving the environment, they are going to great lengths to ensure they don't contribute to pollution. The group, fronted by Eddie Vedder, are currently on an American tour and have calculated all the damage done by their tour vehicles and fans driving to gigs - so they can redress the balance. In an attempt to make up for the 5,700 tons of CO2 emitted by the traffic, the band will buy a 1,400 square mile chunk of rainforest which will contain 5,700 tons of conservation carbon. Pearl Jam have three remaining dates left on the Canadian leg of their tour.

There has to be some kind of moneymaking scheme we can come up with around this:
I just want it cleaned up and have no use for the straw since I gave away my chickens.

Went to the track on Saturday to bet on the ponies -- and no, it wasn't my idea. Beautiful day for it, the sun finally coming out after a wet week. There's something sort of wholesome about gambling on horses. In a casino you're stuck indoors with no glimpse of the outside world, hemmed in at tables with strangers, and when you leave your clothes stink of cigarettes. At the track you're outside in the fresh air with the pretty animals. It's the gambler's way of getting back to nature, I figure.
